Trust-based relational intervention

Let's Go

TBRI

TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children.

TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors.

TBRI PRINCIPLES

EMPOWERING

Empowering principles address physical needs such as hunger, thirst, felt safety, sensory needs.

CONNECTING

Connecting principles promote attachment needs in a high structure, high nurture environment.

CORRECTING

Correcting principles proactively prepare for and respond to behaviors to disarm fear-based behaviors

TBRi Quick tips:

Make sure kids have a drink and snack every 2 hours. Kids who have experienced trauma are likely to experience low blood sugar, as their insulin receptors are often damaged

Offer choices to help a child to feel like they have a voice and control over the situation.

Check engines to make sure kiddos are attuned to their bodies.

Offer a compromise to a child who is acting out. Say to them, "it seems like you need a compromise" and ask them if they have any ideas

Look for opportunities for healthy touch: bandaids, tattoos, face paint, etc

Give lots of 'yeses'

Give space for sensory sesitivity or hypo-sensitivity and help children to feel physically comfortable

Offer a re-do in a playful way by saying "Woah nelly, you want to try that again?"

Warm voice and eye contact

Help a child to attune by offering them words to put to their feelings

Cat it low, and look for situations that are about to get out of control. Diffuse them calmly and keep it moving!

Provide a calming space for children to regroup
